Human trafficking is modern day slavery, where people take advantage of other people by controlling and exploiting them, while the victims are hidden in plain sight.
Romania is a country that lost millions of people due to the promise of a better life abroad, many of them ending up as victims. Dreaming of a better life became a vulnerability in front of human traffickers so Romania became the primary source country for victims of trafficking in Europe.
The small number of human trafficking cases reported and identified in Romania compared to the situation estimated by international organizations is a multi-cause problem.
DETECT aims to
- organize training sessions on detection and reporting of cases of human trafficking, as well as in working with victims of abuse and in victim-centred procedural perspectives for priests, psycho-educational counselors, tourism and beauty industry staff;
- to create a customized resource platform for all non-formal stakeholders to support them in the early detection of indicators related to human trafficking and exploitation;
- to create a model of local intervention, with the support of partners and survivors of human trafficking.
Sexual exploitation
If you suspect someone may be experiencing trafficking, report it. Learning the warning signs of sexual exploitation could be life saving.
Women, men and also children can be victims. People who have been trafficked may:
- have very few items of clothing
- work in various locations
- be escorted whenever they go to and return from work and other outside activities
- have tattoos or other marks indicating “ownership” by their exploiters
- work long hours or have few if any days off
Labour exploitation
If you suspect someone may be experiencing trafficking, report it. Learning the warning signs of labour exploitation could be life saving.
Women, men and also children can be victims. People who have been trafficked may:
- have no labour contract
- never leave the work premises without their employer
- be subjected to insults, abuse, threats or violence
- not be dressed adequately for the work they do: for example, they may lack protective equipment or warm clothing
forced begging
If you suspect someone may be experiencing trafficking, report it. Learning the warning signs of forced begging could be life saving.
Women, men and also children can be victims. People who have been trafficked may:
- be children, elderly persons or disabled migrants who tend to beg in public places and on public transport
- have physical impairments that appear to be the result of mutilation
- be children of the same nationality or ethnicity who move in large groups with only a few adults
- be punished if they do not collect or steal enough
- move in groups while travelling on public transport: for example, they may walk up and down the length of trains
