On the 14th of May 2013, during the High Level Meeting of the UN General Assembly on the Appraisal of the Global Plan for Action to combat trafficking in persons, Amb. Simona Miculescu, Permanent Representative of Romania to the UN, delivered a speech that highlighted the commitment of our country to the global efforts of combating this scourge.
The main aim of the reunion was to examine the progress that has been made in the implementation of the UN Global Plan for Action adopted in 2010 regarding the combat against trafficking in persons as well as other legal instruments relevant for the field.
Amb. Miculescu underlined in her speech that trafficking in persons is one of the worst forms of human rights abuse. The right answer to this abuse should be a coherent approach at the international level, with the involvement of all governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental stakeholders. The Ambassador also added that, from the Romanian perspective, the key words will be: Prevention, Protection (of victims), Prosecution (of criminals) and Partnership.
“The fight against human trafficking goes deeper than politics, touching our collective sense of humanity, our collective responsability for protecting the fundamental and inalienable right of all human beings to enjoy their lives in freedom, dignity and security. This is a responsability to be upheld by all of us, no matter where or who we are, regardless of race, creed or walk of life. In this there should be no lines to separate us. It is therefore up to us to take a firm action for turning our societies and communities in places that are less conducive to such horrendous crimes as human trafficking” – SIMONA-MIRELA MICULESCU
