Inspiring Freedom

It was another great Freedom Fighters Academy meeting on Saturday!

The topic of this meeting was leadership and we focused on the idea that to be a good leader, one must have a good self-concept and know him/herself. There were activities in which each participant could recognize their leadership strengths and weaknesses and see what skills they wished to develop more.

We also discussed motivation and how, as leaders, we must both understand our personal motivations as well as how to motivate others and keep that motivation up.

We had different interactive games such as building a house in teams where each person could only touch one material (example: paper, markers, tape, and glue) to demonstrate that in life there are different kinds of leaders and someone who is a great leader in one situation may not be in another. We also had the freedom fighters break into pairs and take turns wearing blindfolds and being led around an obstacle course to simulate how it feels to be a leader and a follower.

After lunch we had a panel of anti-trafficking experts in the field. All the 4 P’s of anti-trafficking were present: Prevention, Protection, Prosecution, and Partnerships. It was great hearing the panel speak about their personal experiences and inspiring the freedom fighters that the program is extremely important as as individuals each member of society can make a large impact in combatting trafficking. The freedom fighters shared that it was a great and informative event and that they learned a lot. Information from the panel will help guide them in brainstorming and developing their own anti-trafficking community projects to be implemented by October 2015 in honor of the European Day against Human Trafficking.

To conclude the event, all the freedom fighters made promises and commitments to take action against trafficking between now and the next meeting and we concluded with pictures with the “sunt un om liber” (I’m a free person) signs.

It truly was a great day and we want to thank all of the people that made it such a successful and enjoyable event! We are really looking forward to the next meeting in April!

“This Saturday marked another Freedom Fighter’s Academy meeting. I was profoundly impressed by their commitment and strong desire to absorb information and develop their skill and abilities. I strongly believe that this young generation of Romanians can produce significant and lasting changes in the values and directions of our culture. ”  Filip Ologeanu, MATTOO Org.
